Nut slot height on new Les Paul -are you expected to cut it

website nut slot depth which i perceive as insane The nut length is 42mm Is that normal? did he do it on purpose? or because he had no proper nuts nut slot depth With normal string heights for a steel stringed guitar at the 12th fret , a nut cut to same heights
